In 1820, two years after she wrote the momentous Frankenstein, Mary Shelley wrote a story for Laurette, the eleven-year-old daughter of Lady Mountcashell, who had eloped to Italy under scandalous circumstances like Mary herself. The story, Maurice or the Fisher's Cot, had lain unpublished and undiscovered until 1997, exactly two hundred years after Mary Shelley's birth.
