A lot of heartbreak and injustice in this novel that follows the life and family of a Japanese/Hawaiian girl born to parents in the Molokai leper colony. She was adopted by a Japanese-American family that got caught up in historical maelstroms around WWII.

The author's narrative style is simple yet emotionally effective. I cared about nearly all the characters and wept a few times at what they were forced to go through.

Highly recommended.
