Stephen Greeleaf has been compared to a modern day Raymond Chandler. I think Greenleaf is an incredibly under-appreciated author. His protagonist, John Marshall Tanner, is a San Francisco attorney turned PI who is middle-aged, world-weary, sarcastically funny, a bit hard-boiled, but sensitive and a bit vulnerable, too--in other words, human. In this outing, he meets an old friend at his college reunion who asks for Tanner's help in uncovering the truth behind the death threats he has been receiving from a white supremacist hate group. Now a succsessful attorney, his days as a young worker in the civil rights movement are part of his past. Or are they? And who is behind the Alliance for Southern Pride? This is a fast-paced, funny, and thoughtful mystery.
