Lovesey continues to delight me with the way he waves red herrings in front of your face, then shows you other suspects before revealing a previous red herring is actually the criminal. But, just to put you off the track, he doesn't do this in every Peter Diamond novel.

And, although the reader may not like it, he makes sure his protagonist, Peter Diamond, is not the suave hero other writers present to their readers. In many ways, Diamond has a rough personality his team has to deal with.
