5th in the medieval series about Brother Cadfael, a 12th century Benedictine monk. A rather unpleasant rich old man is going to wed a girl half his age, and all of Shrewsbury is talking of it. But then the man is found murdered in the forest. Why did he go that way and who knew he would be there? Was it his squire, a young man who would like that girl for himself? And who is the mysterious cowled figure at the leper colony? Brother Cadfael, who can take advantage of the smallest clue, doesn't think young Jocelyn could be the murderer. And of course there's true love involved...Cadfael will clear the innocent, find the guilty party and see that love has it's way. I do love this series; while there's a formula, they are quite convincing with historical detail and solid characters.
