This book is a 5 star if you can cope with Roald Dahl (of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory fame) lower than that if you can't. Dahl has an off the wall sense of humor and horror, wonderful timing, and remembers what it was like as a child. Although I listed it for 9-12s, the 4 through 8s will enjoy it as well.

Revolting Rhymes features his take on such oldies as Cinderella, Goldilocks, the Three Little Pigs and 3 more such stories. All in very rhythmical Ogden Nash type poetry.

Dirty Beasts make horrifically funny bed time stories. I especially liked the story The Ant-Eater, wherein a rich boy gets an ant-eater for a pet, neglects it till it almost starves to death, and pays the inevitable price for doing so.
