This is a charming classic by Washington Irving (who was named after George Washington). Irving was the first American author to be able to make a living by writing (and no other job). He is the person who coined New York City as being "Gotham."

Irving shows lots of humor in this tale of Rip Van Winkle, always on the outs with Dame Van Winkle (his wife and tormentor). He would help anyone else if it would keep him from tending to his own dilapidated farm. When he comes back, after his 20-year nap, his wife is deceased, and Rip can while away the hours as he chooses.
