This book sets up the framework for the story to be told. It's a story of "legend" (prophecy?) coming true. For the first time in centuries a man is born with "fire". This is what the "magic" is called. There is confusion and resentment that a man now has power. Foretold epic battle of "good" (fire) and bad (shadow) is starting to happen. The world is rustic. The love stories happen between same gender and opposite gender and even human with elementals. It is a fairly easy read if you like description of how the story's system of magic works. I enjoyed this book and will be reading the next 2 books. I really enjoyed the fact that the characters were treated with a real degree of like-ability by the author. It's nice to read a book where the author really likes the characters.
