Hurrah a standalone! I liked it better than the last Perry I read, but not enough to gush about it. It has Perry's usual flat narrative, and a blank and unemotional but supremely competent protagonist. About the most we learn about his inner life is that he still holds a grudge against his ex-wife, totally understandable. I liked that I couldn't really tell for a long time if Ellen was a good guy or bad guy. Lots of action, with a rather fun denouement at the police station. I liked the motive behind all the mayhem, which is vaguely hinted at during the action, but not how all the details were dumped in at the end. It went from a breakneck pace with bodies dropping everywhere to a screeching halt with Harry sitting in the assessor's office for hours on end. Harry's discovery of that path seemed too convenient for the plot, not sure I believe anyone would have followed up that way. So...rather uneven pacing, excellent imagery, so-so dialogue. I'll still pick up the next Perry novel if there is one, but I don't buy them any more.
