Just finished The Wonder Worker, a great book in a series by Susan Howatch. There is a deliberate emphasis on the spiritual aspect of life, which may be a turn-off or a turn-on, depending upon the reader. I have found it fascinating. I especially liked the comparison of traditional language for evil (the Devil, demons, possession, etc.) and more modern psychological language (psychosis, nervous breakdown, obsession, the force of evil, etc.) to describe essentially the same suffering.
Susan Howatch also does a beautiful job of character development. Her characters are multidimensional and flawed. I often find myself wanting to shout to a character "Don't do it! Don't go there!" I have read this series of books a couple of times, but loaned the Wonder Worker to a friend and it was never returned. Thanks to PGS I have the full set again!
