Michael Connelly introduced Renee Ballard in THE LATE SHOW in 2017. 'The Late Show' refers to the night shift in the Hollywood station of LAPD. Although Renee was a bright light in the LAPD, she was assigned to the midnight shift in Hollywood as punishment for filing a sexual harassment complaint against one of her supervisors.

One night, she meets Harry Bosch working his way through some LAPD files. Her curiosity peaked, Renee figures out what Bosch is working on -- a 15-year-old runaway who was killed and her body dropped off at a Hollywood dumpster. This was the daughter of Elizabeth Clayton, a character in TWO KINDS OF TRUTH (2017).

This is a very dark Harry Bosch novel. It seems as if Connelly is weaning us off of Harry -- slowly but surely. I enjoyed this book but worry that there soon won't be any more Harry Bosch. 4.5 stars
