Dani Arnold, the heroine of the book, is in her mid-twenties, an editor, and lives in New York City in an apartment with her cat Bismark. She meets a lost little 10-year-old girl, Maria Mendeneres, who was visiting from Argentina and was supposed to be met at the airport by her father. Dani takes her in while trying to track down the father, who eventually finds them.
Alex Mendeneres ends up asking Dani to take care of Maria for a little while because he has some dangerous business to attend to. His family has been guarding some religious scrolls for over 500 years and now his estranged wife has found where they were hidden at their hacienda in Argentina and smuggled them back to the United States. The Vatican is expecting these scrolls to be delivered to them by Mendeneres. A kidnapping attempt is made on Maria, as well as lots of intrigue, Dani's apartment is trashed, a murder, etc. Dani and Alex fall in love, though they can't be together because Alex is not divorced from his wife.
I had a hard time liking Dani. The author portrays her as this wise-cracking New Yorker, but sometimes she just seems like a jerk to me. And I didn't think the love affair between Dani and Alex was built up or developed that much. However, I really liked the relationship Dani had with little Maria. She was so loving and caring towards her and that part of the book came across very sincere and real for me. I also liked the plot and some of the other characters. All in all, I liked the book, though I did not love it.
