2 families leave Norway for America to seek a better life by homesteading in the Dakota territory. Landing in NY the 2 Bjorklund brothers along with their wives and children instantly find the streets are not paved in gold. They catch the train for N. Dakota and get jobs in a small town until the men can find the farms of their dreams. When they start homesteading adversity, and the ability to overcome obstacles constantly thrown at them, close family ties, their hard work triumphing over those that choose the alternative, and good neighbors make this a wonderful book. I almost didn't read it thinking it might not appeal to my masculinity, but this one will appeal to all. I consider Snelling an author that makes the homesteading in N. Dakota as real to me as if I were one of the early pioneering families. I have already ordered books 2 and 3 of this series, this should give you insight into my pleasure i found within the covers of this novel. Read it I'm sure you shall enjoy it as much as I did.
