Hamish Macbeth has women problems! First, Effie, the wannabe artist literally chases Jock and he runs the other way. Unknown to him, Effie tells everyone who'll listen that they are engaged and, in fact, she is pregnant with his child! Effie is found dead of an apparent suicide but Hamish just doesn't feel it's so. He begins his own private investigation and an American bore is murdered! What does he have to do with it, Hamish wonders. The man kept a notebook of all his conversations and observations of the small village...this notebook cost him his life. During all this, Hamish is surrounded by women who distract him: Caro (Effie's sister), Betty (Jock's agent), Priscilla (his old heart throb), Elspeth (his former lady friend) and Robin (the new inspector detective from Strathbane). The distractions nearly cost him his life and there are just too many suspects. Hamish finally figures it out but there are so many dead ends that he almost gave it up. I enjoyed the book immensely. I like Hamish Macbeth and the little village of Lochdubh. Very good read.
