Tragedy leaves two children without parents in this deftly created tale. This book begins slowly with the children, Cat and his sister, Gwendolin, finding themselves living in the home of Chrestomanci. Here life takes an interesting turn. Gwendolin is a witch with lofty goals primary of which is impressing Chrestomanci with her talents. He seemingly doesn't notice much of what she does but she keeps trying. Since he has no magical talent, Cat quietly observes it all and just follows along with his sister and her attempts.
Packed with slowly developing characters, the story introduces the world of Chrestomanci in a read that flows flawlessly building to a surprising climax. It's a world much like our own except for the magically endowed witches and wizards. All the while, one wonders just who is Chrestomanci. A benevolent wizard or someone much more complex?
The true hero is Cat whose life changes with the book climax and the encouragement of Chrestomanci. At this point, the reader surprisingly discovers the answer to that question and why he took the Chant children into his life.
I was delighted to find that many adults enjoyed this introductory read into a fascinating series. Some had read the book to children while others apparently read it for themselves. No wonder. The author is wonderfully talented at weaving a grand tale.
