Book 2. This is a great anime/graphic novel we have had for over a decade (published in 1989). According to Wikipedia it is "the very first manga to be translated into English and published in North America." For a while, we heard that Steven Spielberg had picked up the movie rights. I don't know what happened to that, but the story is solid. We never found book 1, but it is easy to jump into the story.

STORY UP TO NOW:

Mai, a seemingly normal girl of fourteen, is discovered by the Wisdom Alliance to possess awesome psychokinetic powers. The Alliance, in the name of world peace, has hired the Kaieda Intelligence Agency to capture Mai and deliver her to their clutches. Mai's father, Shuichi, however, escapes with Mai to the Togakushi Shrine, where Mai learns of her heritage and her solemn responsibility as the possessor of such power.

Kaieda, however, soon discovers their whereabouts. Shuichi attempts to flee over the mountains with his daughter, but is forced to send Mai ahead alone when Kaieda releases the man-monster Tsukiro to bar their way. Shuichi battles the awful beast but is defeated and throne into the ravine. Mai turns with hatred to fight Tsukiro when Intetsu, a University student who is hiking through the mountains, intervenes and defeats Tsukiro himself.

Intetsu aids Mai in returning to Tokyo, but when Mai falls suddenly ill, he decides to become her permanent protector and takes her to stay with him at his college dorm. While he is away, however, Mai wanders sadly through the streets of Tokyo wishing for the simple life she had led before being discovered by the Wisdom Alliance. In an act of pure loving innocence, she befriends a stray puppy, but inadvertently causes a terrible auto accident while trying to save the puppy from being killed by on-rushing traffic. The incident alerts kaieda to Mai's presence in Tokyo and the hunt to possess Mai begins anew.
