This is book 6 in a series. I highly enjoyed the first 5 books of the series. This series is High Fantasy, following the adventures of a human living in a city filled with many different species - both mortal and immortal. Kaylin grew up in the slums, but escaped shortly after strange magic marked her with runes on her arms and legs. As she's grown up she's attracted the attention of the powerful movers and shakers of the Empire.

This book is the weakest book in the series to date. There isn't much action. Instead the book is filled with philosophy and endless rehashing of the past. I found myself skimming through much of the book. My favorite character, Lord Nightshade only showed up in a couple chapters, although he was certainly a very important character in those chapters.

My biggest complaint is the threat faced by Kaylin and Elantra in this book. For the second book in a row the world faced certain apocalypse. It worked the first time, but this time I had a sense of "did we do this already" when reading this book. Hopefully Sagara can salvage the excitement and quality of the early books in book 7.
