-(#4 in the Havers-Lynley series) This book was a prelude to the series. It described Deborah, St. James, Tommy and Helens relationship when Deborah was with Tommy. They went to the mansion to announce their engagement with Deborahs Dad, Helen, St. James, St Jamess sister (Sydney) and boyfriend (Justin), Tommys brother and girlfriend. There were drugs, murder, family secrets and suspense in this one. Family members were involved. Mick, the caretakers son-in-law was murdered first. It was meant to look like it was done by a jealous husband or someone like that because he was castrated. The second death was Sydneys boyfriend. They werent sure if it was murder or an accident. You find out about Tommys estranged relationship with his mom. She was having an affair with a Dr. friend of the family while his father was dying of cancer. Tommy found out and things blew up from there. I liked this book but I thought there was way to much plot. I felt saturated by information which included a violent fight between Sidney and Justin, Lynley's cocaine-addicted brother, the brutal murder of Mick, and Justin's death on the cliffs, Lynley's estrangement from his mother since his father's death many years before, and St. James's love for Deborah. (Tommy brakes off the engagement when he realized Deborah loved St. James)
