I've never read any books in the Fortune series, so if you're a fan, perhaps you'll have a different experience with this book. Beginning here, I knew none of the secondary characters and therefore had no emotional connection with them. The hero came off as a jerk who cared more about money than his family. The heroine was a shy workaholic who didn't get close to people for fear of being emotionally injured. I didn't like either of them and found the writing repetitive and "telling" rather than "showing." As an aside, I think it was also an unrealistic portrayal of a non-profit organization providing a lavish salary and allowing a former rancher to develop the content for an anti-bullying program.
