Derick was introduced in the first book (but this stands on its own). In this Derick goes back to his hometown after his mother's suicide to catch a traitor. It will be the last job he does for the Crown. He's worked as a spy for the past 13-14 years. He crosses paths with Emma, a friend from childhood. Emma is working as the magistrate in place of her brother who had an accident years ago leaving him with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and subsequent stroke (CVA). At the start they are trying to figure out who murdered one of Derick's maids.
Emma is super intelligent and also has loved Derick since she was a young girl. That's one of the things I liked about Derick; he was impressed with Emma's knowledge and she was fully involved in the investigation. She does eventually realize Derick's background and confronts him about it. And of course Feelings develop.
This does have a slower start, but picks up. There is more than 1 murder and things do tie together nicely. And I did guess who the traitor was, but thought the "why" wasn't explained
