Gordon Korman is great. I just finished reading this and it is just as funny as I thought it was when I read it at 12 (I'm a Gen Xer). Highly irreverent and the plot still works. This author stood out during all of the "formula" books of the 80s (SVH, Babysitter's Club). Anyway, great book from an under-appreciated author.
