Katherine A. (solveig) reviewed Mindless, Poorly written, and Mysogynistic on
Helpful Score: 3
The writing in this book is over descriptive, repetitive, and Meyer obviously had a thesaurus on hand to try to mask this.
Through the entire series, I have to admit that Bella is a flat, boring character who never grows, never changes, and never really gets the reader to root for her or cry with her. They just dont care enough.
The misogynistic tone in all these books was appalling, considering this is what the Tweens are reading right now. If this is what Meyer wants the younger generation to think love is really about, Im terrified and wont be surprised when our young marriage and even younger divorce rates skyrocket.
Edward is controlling, he is jealous, he is downright mean to Bella and she still follows him swooning with no real reason other than a primal attraction. She falls in love with him after two weeks and cannot be without him. Then there is the triangle with Jacob who actually treats her well but she doesnt care when Edward is around.
Never is there an option in the series for Bella to just be happy being Bella. It is always assumed that to be happy she must pick Edward or Jacob, neither of which end up being anything resembling the shell of a descent, caring, man.
I could rant for days about the psychology of this book and how awful it is
Yet there was a part of the vamp-lit lover in my the dorked out to it. Granted I skipped pages and pages of writing and still got the jist. I also will forever have an eye-twitch whenever I see the words crooked and smile together.
Im happy to clear space in my bookshelf by getting rid of these books. Hopefully whatever fills the place wont make grey matter drip from my ears.
