Enuff already with the violence worship. Disappointing because this author is talented with a great voice but he chose a dreadful story, including that old formulaic character of the bad-ass, tough guy with the soft spot for 1 person (his 11-yr old daughter). That right there should've had this book listed as fantasy since I & others I'm close to have known way too many tough guys who didn't give a damn about anybody but themselves, espec. not their own kids. (Why do you think there are so many kick-to-the-stomach "miscarriages" & kids "falling down stairs"?) Yeah, yeah, he's trying to save her life but that overly-detailed, dwelled-upon boxing scene with him hitting her? Are you kidding me?! Yeah, he covers his face for a few sec. (Regretfully I guess? Felt put in at the last min. by a rightfully horrified editor.) So you've got talent, Mr. Harper; but it'd be better served by getting away from admiration of the streak of violence some have; there's too much of that already in our society.
