I read the Breconridge Brothers out of order, but after enjoying Bk 2(A Sinful Deception) so much I had to read go back and read Augusta(Gus) and Harry's story. I liked both books equally well. Gus and Harry become close after he suffers a serious accident at her family's country estate and is bedridden for weeks. He's actually there to propose to her flighty and selfish sister, but that plan soon falls by the wayside. The sister takes off because she can't be bothered with an injured man, and Gus, who is the most responsible member of the family, ends up doing a lot of the nursing. Harry is the heir of a Duke, and therefore a bit spoiled and fond of his privilege, and he pretty much turns the household upside down. To his credit though, it doesn't take him long realize that he's had a lucky escape from the sister and that Gus is the woman for him. Even though she's not the beauty of the family, he recognizes her wonderful character.
It always makes me cringe when characters are ill or injured in historicals because of the horrible medical treatments they used then. What with the bleeding and the horrible concoctions they took, it's a miracle anyone survived. But Harry does survive(despite the doctor) and it's sweet to see how they fall in love, and how determined he is to marry Gus. In fact I liked this couple so much, I had to go back and read Bk 2 a second time, just to see the parts where Gus and Harry appear again after several years of marriage.
Isabella Bradford has a lovely style of writing, and a good sense for the appropriate historic atmosphere. It's a sweet but sexy and emotional love story. I'll be looking for more of her books.
