Starting off like another homicide novel, with a body found by a dumpster in a supermarket parking lot and winding up on an adventure that takes you south to Beaverton, Oregon, the book not only has you wonder who the perpetrator is, but also takes a look at some of the sleazy underside of school administrators.

Perhaps what is the most compelling is understanding how a homicide detective thinks, even one who is a functional alcoholic. And, under the current cloud hanging over many police for alleged racism, this does give you a very good look at how people of color and the LGBTQ community was perceived in the late 1980s.

There is an officer down situation in the book that will kick you into reality and help you better understand the police fraternity.

It also make you wonder when Jance is going to deal with Beaumont's drinking.

Yes, Jance understands alcoholism, I've met her and heard her speak about her life experiences married to one. Yes, she writes about what she knows and is tops at her craft.
