This is a prequel to [book:Graceling|3236307] and the characters aren't the same. The world isn't the same. The creatures aren't the same. It is very difficult to get into this book due to the strangeness of the world itself but well worth the effort.
Fire is a monster-human hybrid with psychic abilities. She is either feared by everyone she meets or adored to the point of harrassment. She can't go out in public without a disguise. There is great unrest in her world and she is required by the King to come to King's City and interrogate prisoners to find out what is planned by the enemies. Her father was an insane monster creature who greatly influenced the previous king in a terrible manner. Fire is terribly afraid that she is like her father and refuses to use her psychic abilities in this manner though she travels to King's City to help. It aggravated me that she made this three week journey when she knew darn well she wasn't going to help. After a month or so of withstanding the pressure, she finally realizes that she isn't like her father and changes her mind. The story takes off from there and really flies. Her love interest is very interesting and I like him a lot.
One you get to the meat of this novel, it's wonderful. Hopefully a third book is in the offing as I'd like to get back to the Graceling end of things and see if the two worlds are going to meet and the outcome.
