This 5th book of the series went a little slower than the previous, not because of the story, but because of the complicated path it pursued and the difficulty of remembering events from other books that it links to. As Kaylin Neya is patrolling the city, she meets with someone from her past who threatens to destroy her current life by exposing her shameful secrets. But dark shadows of evil and destruction threaten the city, and in order to combat them, Kaylin is ordered to enter the fief of Barren, the very place she has tried so hard to forget. In the company of her faithful corporal Severn and the Dragon Lord Tiamaris, she faces darkness and magic that threaten to overwhelm her and her world's very survival.

This story was more surreal even than the second book of the series, Cast in Courtlight, but though it was a bit of a struggle to understand the supernatural forces that Sagara has woven into her world, it's well worth it. Kaylin's character has grown much since the first book, with more room for further development in this fascinating and unique fantasy series.
