There was a good reason why the Western Writers of American voted Elmer Kelton the Greatest Western Writer of all time. He doesn't have a formula, but takes diverse character and events and turns them into a story you can't stop reading.
This one is about the early days of Texas independence, men and women having to get over their grief and start over, bad men, racism, children who haven't yet learned they are suppose to hate others, and the inevitable---sometimes surprising---pairing off of men and women which is characteristic of Mens' Romance (Westerns).
