The book tells the story of Ellie Mathews who won the 1998 Pillsbury Bake-Off contest with her recipe of Chicken Salsa Couscous. I enjoyed the story but Ellie Mathews is probably one of the strangest people ever. She is known for being extremely UN-emotional - she wrote this book because she had been villified for not showing any emotion (joy or excitement) when she won the contest. She wasn't excited to be on TV, she wasn't happy to get the money (in fact, she couldn't even remember where she put the check that was given to her).

She is NOT likeable. Frugal to a fault (in other words, cheap beyond belief), emotionally distant, unapproachable, yet I was left with the feeling that if I met her in person, I would probably like her as she is a no-nonsense kind of woman.

Worth reading. 3.5 Stars.
