Definitely an awesome book. I loved her first book and this one is just a good.
Takes place in New Orleans during the 50s. Her mother proudly names poor Josie after a famous prostitute. Her mother also is one and for the most part ignores Josie who raises herself practically, even taking a room above the bookstore when she is only twelve years old. The store owner provides this gateway for her and secretly protects her.
The madam where mom works also makes sure Josie grows up to be smart and doesn't follow in the footsteps of her dishonest mother. But, will Josie be able to get out of New Orleans after her own mother frames her in a murder/thief gone wrong. The mob is after Josie now.
