I think this is probably a five star read for Civil War scholars. I understand that it was an award winning doctroal dissertation because of the in depth research. I assume it is responding to previously held theories about Southern women not partcipating in slavery because it wasn't lady-like. As an average reader who picked this up from the "hot reads" section of the local library for book group, it was too academic. I accept and agree with all her premises after reading her analyses of primary sources. I just didn't need 200 pages of specific southern ladies names committing atrocities to be convinced of Jones-Rogers' point of view.
