I'm a fan of this series which, in order, finds Malice on the Highlands, in Cornwall, on the Moors, in London, and Downstream (i.e. on the River Test). The mysteries themselves are not rambling, multiple-victim affairs. Their highlight is the local lore the author includes about the various interesting locations encountered as our detective solves his crime.
Graham Thomas (a pseudonym for author Gordon Kosakoski) usually has his DCS on a trip away from Scotland Yard indulging his interest in food, drink, fishing, and history only to have him fall into a busman's holiday, solving a crime away from home. This is the only one in the series where we see Powell at work at Scotland Yard.
Sadly, there will be no more in the Malice series unless Random House signs up another author to take it over. Mr. Kosakoski died of leukemia in 2008 at his home in British Columbia. So if you're interested, snap up these paperbacks while they're still available.
