After breaking her leg in her last case, D.I. Kim Stone has returned to work. She, along with Stacey and Bryant, are still dealing with their grief after the death of their teammate, Kevin Dawson. Immediately they are given a new case. Dr. Gordon Cordell was found murdered. Kim knows him from their last case. He had been performing illegal abortions, but charges were never brought against him. Kim wonders if someone else had decided to make him pay.

Meanwhile, Stacey is working the case of a missing 15-year-lold girl. Jessie Ryan's mother reported that she never returned home after visiting her best friend. This is not considered a critical case since Jessie has a pattern of running away and returning a few days later. But Stacey suspects that something bad may have happened to Jessie.

In the ninth book of the series, everyone is dealing with their grief and not acting like themselves. Kim and Bryant are sniping at each other. Stacey can't bear to look at the empty desk across from her. When a new detective is assigned to their team, no one is happy about it. D.S. Austin Penn has worked with the team before, but they are not ready to make him feel welcome.

The mystery was very hard (for me) to figure out. I kept jumping between a few suspects, trying to guess the identity of the killer. I wasn't even close to discovering the killer.
My rating: 5 Stars.
