While I didn't get into this novel as quickly as the author's first book, I can understand the other reviews if they skimmed and skipped around. This man is an amazing writer, but, like an artist, you have to learn to look at the whole picture and be able to see it before it is completed. Read about the building of The Duomo and see the persistence that was required in building that.
Will North is a very descriptive writer, but there's a reason for this. He is building the story and what's going to happen, stone by stone, not building a wall. It may have helped that I googled the locations in the book, so it was like a travelogue following the characters and knowing the countryside, which ends up being very important in following the story.
I will agree that the two main characters didn't come to life as magically as in his first book, but this is an amazing piece of writing about rebuilding your life, not stone walls; however, those play a big part in the exciting conclusion as well.
Not a fast read, but a great book!
