After waiting a long time for this book to pop to the top of my wishlist, I ultimately found it disappointing. The list of characters seems arbitrarily chosen and the writing has a very forced humor that usually falls flat. The authors often neglect to make any sort of case for a character's inclusion on the list. And some of the characters seem too obscure to me to be a legitimate inclusion, such as Nora Helmer from the play A Doll's House, or The Wandering Jew.

I would have preferred a more scholarly book, with a little more thought and more exploration of the real influence of each character.
