Painter's Mill is running out of killers, so Kate hits the road for this one. When a childhood friend and sort of ex-boyfriend is arrested for a cold case murder of a former bishop, the leadership of his church comes to Kate to help. Kate must juggle dealing with a less than friendly police force, hostile family members of the victim, and her own unresolved feelings for the alleged killer while trying to prove his innocence.

This is the 14th installment of the series, so some of the phrases and descriptions of Amish life and culture are repetitive. (Series followers know that Kate is a "cop/police officer!" and Tomasetti is the love of her life). Nonetheless, Linda Castillo can be relied upon for a solid mystery with a surprise you didn't see coming.

Thanks to the publisher and Goodreads for an ARC of this book.
