A Reliable Wife tells the stories of a wealthy but lonely business man Ralph Truitt, and Catherine Land, a wife he obtains through the personal ads. I say "stories" because although much of the book chronicles their evolving relationship, both characters have back stories and reasons for entering into a marriage of practicality.
Though the description on the dusk jacket implies that this will be a tale of romance warm enough to melt the Wisconsin snow that is persistent throughout the story, A Reliable Wife is a much darker and complicated tale. It is about deception, desperation, and cruelty, but ultimately also about love and redemption. This debut novel by Robert Goolrick is a quick read, but the characters will remain in your thoughts after the startling conclusion.
