This book has promise - it describes beautiful days, and the opportunity a long-married woman has to take charge of her own life and turn it into something that has meaning for her. What this book delivers instead is the story of a woman who finds that her life's meaning is in supporting the men who love her.
The moral of the story seems to be that self-abnegation is the pinnacle of love. One could argue this has to do with the dated nature of the book, but it is presented in such a slow philosophical way that it seems the author may have truly believed it.
