The more I read paranormal romance the more I realize how hard it is to write a good series. And Darkfever is a very promising start to a fantastic one. This first book was basically about laying the groundwork for the future installments. The pacing was solid and consistent albeit a tad slow at times. I think there could have been more action and definitely more romance. The main character Mackayla Lane reminded me so much of Sookie Stackhouse that I'm sure it is not a coincidence. (A pretty, buxom, blonde, tanned, bartender...from the south. I hope Ms. Moning will give her more distinguishing qualities so I can separate them) I also had a bit of a gripe that the author took the easy way out by saying "I'll spare you the details" on this or that when explicit explanations and descriptions were warranted. Otherwise I liked the concept, the world and the characters and am currently awaiting the next book from paperbackswap.com
