Quiet, thoughtful, and easy-to-read. Seethaler's story of one man's small, simple life in a tiny, mountain town leads the reader through the decades of the 20th century, by way of the progress of a young man through to old age. The protagonist is no hero. He is no villain, nor anyone extraordinary. He is a common, everyman.
