This was a book that had me at the beginning. There was a generous amount of different characters that gave a little of something for anyone reading it. Whether it was the shy and demure, and still suffering the tragic loss of her husband, Linette.......or the gruff and very capable mercenary Cain, the leader of Deliverance Company........or his sidekick and best friend Mallory who was first to do the unforgivable for a mercenary, to fall in love...............to the amazonian, very determined, very outgoing Francine.....the characters reach out and grab your heart with a grip that is firm and but yet very loving. I found myself picturing myself as Cain, a man who wanted to show a tough exterior to the world while never realizing that there was a tender side hiding underneath.......all it would take is for the right woman to bring it out. A line from the back of the book said it all for him......"But then he saw her, and the sight of her took his breath away." A book with a lot of tender moments, some irritating times, and some tragedies that came that had me not wanting to finish the book as I was afraid of the end, it is definitely a book that is well worth reading. The first of three (so far) Deliverance Company books.
