Unhappily, this book is startlingly similar to MC Beaton's series featuring Hamish Macbeth, so much so that I wonder at the publisher who allowed it to be sent to press (and commissioned further books in the series). It isn't that it's badly written or anything, but it's terribly predictable and the characters are so familiar that it's just rather boring and redundant if you've read the Beaton series. I highly recommend Bowen's other series (es), but would counsel you to avoid Constable Evans, particularly if you've read the superior (but occasionally no less formulaic) Beaton books.
