One thing I was surprised about with this book was the fact that despite this book being the first in a series it still had a huge amount of action and intricate plot. Most series beginning books are forced to focus on universe building, but Caine was able to walk the line beautifully between set building, characterization, and plot. That being said, several elements smacked of 2-D but I expect the 2nd book in the series will continue on everything perfectly.

Yes, there were many times when solutions appeared out of thin air, or were extremely lucky for the characters, but still it is meant to be a fun, enjoyable, and simple read, which it pulls off wonderfully thus the rating.

And damn, what a cliff hanger ending! That totally annoys me! I need closure. And I think that readers should feel the need to pick up the 2nd book based on the quality of the first, and not to find out the ending of the first.
