Peter David has woven a nice new crew of characters within the confines of the awesomely created world of Gene Roddenberry. Keeping true to Roddenberry's visions of the future Peter David has written a series of novels that is compelling and gives us a whole new set of Starfleet's finest to read about.

The U.S.S. Excaliber is an Ambassador Class starship that is captained by M'k'n'zy (Mackenzie) Calhoun, a Xenexian man of vision who once lead the oppressed people of his planet in a rebellion against the Danteri tyrants that ran their planet. He now captains a ship of ragtag crew members in a mission to attempt to maintain order in an area once controlled by a militaristic empire that has now collapsed. One ship to patrol an entire sector and keep the peace, Captain Calhoun and his crew have to find a way to keep the powder keg from exploding and taking them with it.
