Stacy's review is spot on. As a fan of the BDB books, I was really looking forward to this series, but the plot is so unnecessarily convoluted, and for reasons unknown to me, Ward (for arguably the first time) does not do well in terms of character development. Further, it's important to note that this book cannot be categorized as a romance: it's urban fantasy. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but the fantasy aspects are tedious to the point of being inexplicable and a little absurd. There is a little bit of romance, though it doesn't concern who I would consider to be the main character, and again, the quality of this aspect of the novel is spotty, at best, and concerns characters that are difficult to care about because they are not developed as well as they should be. And, yes, the book is much too long. I'm hoping that this is just a slow, not-so-good start to the series, and the next installment will be better.
