First, let me tell you I won this book from a GoodReads giveaway. I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy it, but it hooked me by the 10th page. Both Kensington and Maxton have been terribly hurt in the past, and neither felt that they would be able to have a good relationship with the opposite sex.
Kensington James (Kens/Kensi) lost her mother when she was in high school. Her mom was murdered, but the book is at least 3/4 finished before we find out the particulars. She has been able to cope with the first 3 years of college because she has a super roommate, Nicole, but she refuses to really consider what had happened the day she lost her mom. She also has no trust in relationships and hasn't had a boyfriend in all that time.
Maxton Cooper, Max, lived through the trauma of his parent's divorce. His mom had never appreciated everything his dad was doing for them and for the family. She had affairs on the side and finally filed for divorce. His dad never recovered from losing her, and died shortly thereafter. Max has no reason to feel that he can trust any woman, because none of them can be truthful, so he has only allowed himself one night stands. The only person he trusts is his best friend Brighton, who has shared Max's home since Max's dad died.
This book is written with Kensi and Max alternating chapters, and we get to know how each feels about the relationship that came to be because their "besties" (Nic and Bright) were in their own relationship. It was a great way to have the story progress, as we were privy to each character's thoughts and feelings as the friendship evolved. And it had a lot of evolving to do, as neither was big on trust or belief.
I like the slow development of the relationship, from acquaintance to friend to something much more. It made me feel that they really did develop into a couple.
Really liked the book, and I'll be on the lookout for more books by Kaylee Ryan.
