An intriguing fantasy in a strange world. We are introduced to an exhausted and wounded Jame, who stumbles into the city of Tai-Tastigon. Though her memory is blurred she knows is that she is a Kencyr, one of the chosen people who serve the Three-Faced God. She also knows she is outcast by her family because of her strange powers, but feels compelled to find her twin brother Tori and return to him his birthright, their father's ring and broken sword. But in her condition she is forced to remain in a city that is ruled by many gods, and in time comes to question her own faith.
This is a strange and confusing story but strangely compelling - and Jame is a character that makes you want to know more about her even as revelations lead to further confusion for the reader. I suppose it is a testament to the author's skill that although I could not really make sense of the world she created, the characters and events were fascinating enough to make me want to stay and find out what happens; and yes, read the next book in the series.
