It's really hard to discuss this book without giving away the twist. Suffice to say, it wasn't what I thought. (I was REALLY hoping there was a nefarious plot by the Universal Union with some alien intelligence to sacrifice lives in exchange for... Idk... safe passage through space? Magical technology? -because yeah, that shows up.)
You don't HAVE to be a Star Trek fan to giggle like a loon at this book, but it helps. It basically answers the question "what would a sane, self-aware person do if they were plunked down in the Enterprise?" (especially after having been on the receiving end at 'Star Fleet' headquarters of the mission logs, fantastical stories and artifacts the flagship sent back.) (And THAT would be a good prequel - or sequel.)
I'm still sort of confused by the 'Codas.' Mainly as in... why? It was cheesy and sappy. I don't know if the author felt the need to pad a 200 page text, or just REALLY needed catharsis for his *ahem* other characters.
