Lord Humphrey has the second story in this series. As a successful gambler, he wants to open an honest gaming venture in London. However, he knows he will need 100,000 pounds to stay solvent through the ups and downs of gaming.

Connie, his sister-in-law, and the Marchioness gather ten of England's wealthiest women for Humphrey to meet. When Humphrey falls for the companion to the heiress (instead of the heiress), readers know there is something afoot. It was very predictable.

After a while, Humphrey grows some conscience too (Reggie did in the earlier book). Humphrey realizes wanting a woman only for her money is not honest. Of the five sons, Humphrey has the most morality.

Two other threads are woven through these stories. First is the story of Mr. Sharp, the steward of the rents, etc., for the Marquess. He is turning out to be a dishonest man., but he's hard to pin down. The other thread concerns the by-blows of the former Marquess. We are introduced to the second illegitimate son in two books. The current Marquess feels a moral obligation to give these sons some assistance in finding their way to a steady career and income.
