A very interesting novel in a somewhat depressing Victorian setting. Women are to be seen and not heard and certainly not express their true feelings. And heavens forbid if you are a member of the lower classes, such as servants or criminals. People such as these do not really have any feelings.

Aside from all that, I began to suspect in the middle of the book just who the killer might be. Initially, I felt it was one of two people, then one of those people began to outpace the other in my suspicions. So the surprising ending wasn't so surprising. Hopefully, as the author intended, it will be a surprise to you.
